هذا الكتاب للدكتور إميل بديع يعقوب ليس محاولة لاستقصاء الأسماء في العربية ولا استقصاء معانيها، إنما يمثل محاولة مهمة في استقصاء جموع ما أثبته المؤلف من كلمات، ولكنه أغفل ذكر الكثير من القياسي منها، اعتمادا على ما أثبته في القسم الأول من معجمه هذا، من أقيستها، ولذلك على من لم يجد جمعا في هذا القاموس ألا يسرع إلى تخطيئه قبل أن يتأكد من عدم قياسه. والجموع في العربية من حيث فصاحتها أربعة أقسام : قسم قياسي وسماعي، وهو الأكثر فصاحة، وقسم سماعي غير قياسي، وهو فصيح ولكنه أقل، وقسم قياسي غير سماعي وهو أقل من الأول والثاني في الفصاحة، وقسم غير قياسي غير سماعي وهذا لا يجوز استعماله.
