تناول الكتاب حيث دون فيه أبو عثمان عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ بعض صور البخل في الذين قابلهم وتعرف عليهم في بيئته الخاصة خاصة في بلدة مرو عاصمة خراسان، وقد صور الجاحظ البخلاء تصويرا واقعيا حسيا نفسيا فكاهيا، فأبرز لنا حركاتهم ونظراتهم القلقة أو المطمئنة ونزواتهم النفسية، وفضح أسرارهم وخفايا منازلهم واطلعنا على مختلف أحاديثهم، وأرانا نفسياتهم وأحوالهم جميعا، ولكنه لا يكرهنا بهم لأنه لا يترك لهم أثرا سيئا في نفوسنا، ولعل أول من حقق نص البخلاء هو المستشرق فان فلوتن، سنة 1900، وقصص الكتاب عبارة عن مواقف هزلية تربوية قصيرة وقد عرض الكتاب بأسلوب طبيعي مع استخدام ألفاظ عامية وكثرة استخدام أسلوب الحوار، كما يعتبر دراسة اجتماعية تربوية نفسية اقتصادية لهذا الصنف من الناس وهم البخلاء.
