لما وجد المؤلف طلاب العلم مهتمين بالهداية لبرهان الدين الفرغاني، والخلاصة لحسام الدين الرازي الكاساني رأى أن يخدم الكتابين بترجمة الأعلام الواردة أسماؤهم فيها فصنف كتابه هذا \" تهذيب الأسماء \" على نسق \" تهذيب \" النووي، وقد ترجم لجميع الأعلام أنبياء كانوا أو علماء أو غيرهم. فابتدأ بسيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم رتبهم على حروف المعجم ذاكرا من ورد باسمه، ثم الكنى، ثم الأنساب، ثم الألقاب، ثم ابن فلان.
