وهذا الكتاب يبحث في جزئية من علم التجويد، وهي تقسيم اللحن في القرآن إلى لحنين : جلي وخفي، وهو أمر سبق إلى تقريره ابن مجاهد البغدادي (ت 324 هـ) حيث قال : \"اللحن في القرآن لحنانؤ: جلي وخفي، فالجلي لحن الإعراب، والخفي ترك إعطاء الحرف حقه من تجويد لفظه\". وعبد الوهاب القرطبي هو أول عالم من علماء التجويد اعتمد على فكرة تقسيم اللحن في تبويب كتابه، وقد وضح المؤلف فكرته تلك في خمسة فصول صدر بها كتابه وهي : فصل في بيان معنى اللحن في موضوع اللغة. فصل في حد اللحن وحقيقته في العرف والمواضعة وذكر السبب الموجب لانتشاره واستمراره. فصل في بيان المراد بالتنبيه على اللحن الخفي والمقصود بالحض على اجتناب الألفاظ المستهجنة. فصل فيما يستفاد بتهذيب الألفاظ وماذا تكون الثمرة الحاصلة عند تثقيف اللسان. فصل في الكلام على اللحن الخفي والألفاظ المستكرهة من جهة التفصيل وعلى وجه التقسيم.
