لقد حفلت قصور الخلفاء والأمراء والقادة والأغنياء بالجواري من كل لون وجنس فمنهن الحبشية، ومنهن الرومية، ومنهن التركية، ومنهن الهندية، وقد تفشي الفساد واللهو في الدور التي غصت بمثل هؤلاء الجواري، ولم تسلم من ذلك قصور الخلفاء الذين بالغوا في اقتنائهن وفي المبالغ التي دفعت لشرائهن حتى أن بعض هؤلاء الخلفاء دفع أربعين ألف دينار ثمنا الجارية واحدة، وهذا المبلغ يكفي لإعالة عائلة لمدة سنة كاملة، وبعضهم جمع في قصره أكثر من ثلاثة آلاف جارية ينفق عليهن ما يكفي للإنفاق على خمسين ألف مسلم، وبعضهم انشغل عن أمور الخلافة بجارية أخذت بعقله وسيطرت على تفكيره حتى مات حزنا بعد موتها فدفن بقربها، كتاب أخبار النساء في العقد الفريد الذي بين أيدينا هو كتاب يحتوي على أخبار النساء وأقاصيصهن وحكاياتهن الموجودة في كتاب العقد الفريد لابن عبد ربه الأندلسي، وهي تشتمل على أغراض شتى، طريفة وشيقة ومسلية يحسن بالمتأدبين معرفتها والاطلاع عليها.
