يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المحاضرات في منهجية البحث ألقاها الدكتور إميل يعقوب على طلاب الدراسات العليا في قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها، وقد جمع المؤلف هذه المحاضرات في كتاب ليسهل على الطلاب تناول مضمونه ويعم نفعه، وقد جعل مضمون الكتاب في تسعة فصول: تطرق في الأول منها إلى المنهجية والمناهج، وشرح في الثاني والثالث العلائق بين الباحث من جهة، والبحث والجامعة من جهة أخرى، وبحث في الرابع طريقة التقميش، وفي الخامس والسادس والسابع كتابة البحث وأقسامه والحاشية، وبين في الثامن الفهارس الفنية الممكن إستخدامها مع الأمثلة عليها، وختم أخيراً بفصل تناول فيه طباعة البحث ومناقشته ونشره، وألحق بكل هذا سبعة ملاحق تفيد الباحث العربي إفادة بينة.
