تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في عصر الملك إدوارد بقصة شابة بريطانية من الطبقة الأرستقراطية تدعى لوسي تصل إلى مدينة فلورنسا الإيطالية رفقة عمتها شارلوت بارتلي لقضاء إجازة من أجل السياحة الثقافية والاطلاع على الفن والروح الإيطالية، وكانت هذه الرحلة جزءا من طقس يطلق عليه (جراند تور) الرحلات الكبرى لاستكمال التعليم، وهي ذات الرحلة التي قام بها جوته وبايرون من قبل في قاعة الطعام في فندق (بيرتوليني). تتبرّم لوسي بسبب أن الغرفتين اللتين خصصتا لهما في فندق بيرتوليني لا تطلان على نهر آرنو بحسب اتفاق الحجز، وإنما تطلان على ساحة لا حياة فيها تبدو وكأنها جرداء.
