هذا الكتاب حصيلة وبداية : حصيلة تاريخ طويل من النصوص والدراسات العربية والأجنبية يؤلف بينها متخصص خبرها زمنا طويلا فانتقى منها الأكثر دلالة والأبلغ تعبيرا عن الحركة الصوفية في الإسلام إلا أن المؤلف لم يقتصر على التأليف بل قدم صورة للوجود كما رآه ابعد المتصوفة مدى في التجربة الصوفية، وبهذا فالكتاب يشكل نقطة انطلاق لدراسات مستقبلية الكتاب خلاصة جيدة عن الحركة الصوفية في أصولها ومصادرها، تطورها ونموها من الزهد إلى الرؤى الشمولية المؤلف يركز على ثلاثة أعلام هم في القمة من التصوف العالمي \"الحلاج، ابن عربي، وابن سبعين\" فعندهم نجد الحب وتجاوزه الوحدة والإحاطة أو حركة الوجود الذي ينبثق من الله ليعود إليه في تجارب متميزه فيها يتجاوز الإنسان ذاته وتلك هي الحياة الروحية في معناها الأصح والأدق.
