يعد كتاب \"تهذيب الأخلاق\" لمؤلفه أبي علي أحمد بن محمد بن يعقوب مسكويه المتوفي سنة 421 هجرية، كتاب جليل في الأخلاق والتربية، أفاد صاحبه من معلومات الفلاسفة الإغريق ودراساتهم في التربية والأخلاق إفادات عظيمة، واختار منها ما يلائم نفس المسلم، ومزج ذلك بالتراث العربي والإسلامي. حيث أصبح مصدرا لا يستغنى عنه في الدراسات التربوية والأخلاقية، وطبقا لما يقوله مترجموه، حظي مسكويه لأول مرة بلقب \"المعلم الثالث\" في تاريخ الفلسفة الإسلامية، نظرا لانشغاله بالأخلاق والحكمة العملية، وللسبب عينه لقب أيضا بـ \"أرسطو العرب\". وفي الكتاب شرح ابن مسكويه \"الأصول العقلية والفلسفية الأخلاقية\" فكان أحد أهم الفلاسفة في التاريخ العربي الوسيط ممن تحدث عن فلسفة الأخلاق، عن طريق معرفة النفس، وتطلعها إلى الكمال.
