ينتمي كتاب \"تصحيح التصحيف وتحرير التحريف\" للصفدي إلى الجهود التي بذلها علماؤنا القدامى لخدمة الفصحى، وتنقيتها مما لحق بها من أخطاء وأوهام من قبل العامة وبعض الخاصة. وربما كان أساس هذه الجهود الرسائل اللغوية المبكرة التي جمعها السلف وصنفوها في أبواب بعينها، بعد أن سمعوها من أفواه أهل البادية الذين لم يخالطوا العجم، ولم تفسد سلائقهم اللغوية، فكانوا بعيدين عن الانحراف الذي شاب الفصحى حين استخدمها الناس على نحو مغاير للأصول، سواء أكان الأمر يتصل بالصوت أم بالصرف أم بالنحو أو بالاستخدام. الشأن الذي أطلق عليه فيما بعد \"لحن العامة\".
