يبحث كتاب (السيف العربي ومكانته في أدبنا) لمؤلفه حسن محمود موسى النميري، في رحلة السيف التاريخية، وفي أسمائه وصفاته وصناعه، والحاذقين الذين يحسنون استخدامه، وأجزائه، وآثاره في لغة الناس وأدبهم وحياتهم، فالسيف من أقدم الأسلحة التي استخدمها البشر، ومن أحبها لنفوس مستخدميها، يشير المؤلف إلى أنه اشتق اسم السيف من قولهم : ساف ماله، أي هلك، فلما كان السيف سببا للإهلاك، سمي سيفا، ومستخدمه هو السياف، وقد عدد العلماء وأهل اللغة في العربية له نحو ألف اسم، وكثرة أسماء المسمى دليل على شرفه وعظمته وعلو مكانته، ومن أهم الأسماء التي أطلقت على السيف : الأبيض، الباتر، الباتك، الجراز، الحسام، الأخثم، المخدم وهو : صارم، صقيل، قصال، قرضاب، قاضب، قاطع، هدام، عطاف، صقيل، مجرد، مسلول، صمصام.
