تدور الرواية في أمكنة مغلقة هي سيارة الإسعاف وغرفة المستشفى، لكنها تنفتح على أمكنة متعددة الجغرافيا بين المنفى والوطن، في الداخل والداخل المحتل عام 1948 وترصد سرديا اللقاء المأساوي بين شاهد على معركة بيروت عام 1982، وبين شاهد على معركة مخيم جنين 2002، يلتقي الاثنان في سيارة الإسعاف وفي غرفة العمليات، الأول هو علي الطوق الذي كان مقاتلا ثم عمل مصورا فشارك في كل معارك الثورة مقاتلا ومصورا في الوقت نفسه، في حين كان الثاني وهو علي ياسر الزرعيني الذي شارك في معركة مخيم جنين ولم يسافر لإكمال الدكتوراة في الأدب الإنجليزي وتاريخ الفن.
