يتجه هذا البحث في مصنفات اللحن والتثقيف اللغوي حتى القرن العاشر الهجري إلى درس اللحن ضمن خطوط منهجية حديثة، وأخرى قديمة تأخذ في الحسبان معيارية الفصحى. واللحن المقصود في بحثنا هو كل انحراف عن اللغة المدونة والمستقرة حتى عصر الاحتجاج، ويشمل جوانب اللغة والصرفية والنحوية والدلالية، وقد تم اختيار الجانب الدلالي، ويقوم هذا الاختيار على منطلقات أساسية وهي : أن البحث العلمي المحكم يجب أن يكون محددا بالمادة أو الزمن أو الاتجاه كي يكون على قدر مقبول من المنهجية، أن هذا الاختيار يعبر عن موقفنا من التطور وتقويمه. وقد تم تقسيم البحث إلى أربعة فصول : مشكلة اللحن والمعيارية، الدلالة بين الدال والمدلول، الدلالة الصرفية، التطور الدلاي.
