يبدو جون ديوى بنظريته فى الفن التى أودعها كتابه هذا فيلسوفا مدهشا ومحيرا في الوقت ذاته فنظريته في الفن هي من الرحابة وسعة الأفق بحيث تختلف مع العديد من النظريات الأخرى وتتقاطع معها في الوقت ذاته فهو يختلف مع التيار الكانطى الذى يؤكد على مبدأ النزاهة الجمالية وعلى تخليص الفن من الطابع العملي ولكنه يتفق معه فى القول بأن الجميل لا يتطابق مع النافع أو ما يخدم غرضا ما وهو يتفق مع الشكلانيين في تقدير أهمية الصورة في الفن ولكنه يختلف معهم في إتخاذهم الصورة الفنية عنصرا وحيدا لقيمة العمل الفني إذ لابد أن تعبر الصورة عن شئ ما دون أن يقتضى ذلك أن يكون التعبير عندئذ تقريرا أو دلالة مباشرة وهو يركز على ماهنالك من الخبرات العلمية.
