هذا الكتاب الكثيف الذي يتكون من ثلاثة أجزاء: الذاكرة والتاريخ والنسيان، في حجم تجاوز السبعمائة صفحة، قد اختزل تجربة فكرية عريضة كان قد راكمها بول ريكور على مدى عقود من الزمن، تركزت في العشرين سنة الأخيرة على الزمن والسرد وإبستيمولوجية المعرفة التاريخية. ولذلك يمكن اعتبار كتاب الذاكرة والتاريخ والنسيان امتدادا فكريا لكتابين آخرين هما الزمن والسرد (1983-1985) 2، والذات عينها كآخر (1990) 3. وهذه التجربة، التي تجمع بين الفهم في الفلسفة، والفهم في التاريخ، والفهم في النقد الأدبي، وتنهل من مدارس فكرية كثيرة، فرنسية وألمانية وأنجلوساكسونية، هي التي جعلته ينهي مساره الفكري كرائد للتأويلية الفلسفية في الفكر الغربي المعاصر.
