في هذه الرواية للكاتب الأمريكي بول أوستر سيجد القارئ الكثير عن الحياة في المجتمع الأمريكي الذي ينتمي إليه أوستر نفسه، لكنه فوق ذلك سيجد رؤية متفحصة من زاوية سردية تتعمق في تفاصيل حياة الفرد في ذلك المجتمع .الطموحات والمعاناة، الخيبات والنجاحات. سيجد قضايا كبرى مثل الشيخوخة والموت، العزلة والسعي لكسرها بعلاقات مختلفة، فضلا عن قضايا ذات طابع فلسفي وأدبي صرف. فبومغارتنر -الأمريكي ذو الأصل اليهودي الذي تتمحور حوله الرواية- يواجه قضية مركزية هي أفقده زوجته أنا وسعيه لملء حياته بما تركته من فراغ. كونه أستاذا جامعيا ومؤلفا مرموقا في مجال الفلسفة يؤهله لما يثري حياته بالطمأنينة والمعني برا كبيرا من ذلك بالاستعادة أو بالفلاش باك، ولكن الكثير أيضا سرد حاضر يتعمد فيه الكاتب استخدام المضارع لنقل صورة حية للأحداث في تتابعها.
