يتناول الكتاب رجل وامرأة كانا ينشدان المعونة من الطبيب النفسي برايان ويس لمساعدتهما على حل مشاكل حياتهما. بيدرو وإليزابيث لم يكونا يعرفان بعضهما. وقد كانا يقصدان عيادة الطبيب، في أيام مختلفة. بالتدريج ؛ اكتشف الطبيب ويس أنهما تحت التنويم المغناطيسي يسردان نفس التفاصيل عن حياة سابقة قبل ألفي عام. الجنود الرومان أساءوا معاملة رجل حتى الموت فيفلسطين آنذاك- بيدرو كان ذلك الرجل المقتول، وإليزابيث كانت ابنته. لاحظ ويس أن بعض الاسترجاعات السابقة للحيوات الماضية تتطابق بالنسبة لكليهما.
