تدور أحداث الرواية حول رحلة المغامر الإنجليزي شارل ستوو إلى الصين لاستكشاف أسرار صناعة الشاي، تلك الرحلة التي بدأت من لندن في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر مرورا بالهند ثم إلى أدغال الصين التى ساهمت في الكشف عن كثير من أسرار التجارة العالمية حينذاك ودور السياسة في تأجيج الصراعات وإشعال الحروب يقول الكاتب فى روايته أن الأفيون يوسع ما ليس له حدود يطيل اللامتناهي يغور في الزمن يعمق اللذة والمتع البغيضة الكئيبة يملأ الروح إلى ما فوق طاقته.
