خنان الإناث : هو إستئصال جزئي أو كلي لأعضاء التأنيث الرئيسة الظاهرة للأنثى، والختان الشرعي : هو إستئصال للقلفة مع أما الختان غير الشرعي (الفرعوني) : فهو اقتطاع البظر وهو الجزء الأكثر حساسية من بين الأعضاء التناسلية للأنثى، وهو تشويه وتغيير لخلق الله سبحانه وتعالى، وهو أخطر أنواع ختان الإناث، وفي جميعها يتم الاعتداء على البظر. في مقدمتها مصر أصبح ختان الإناث ظاهرة عالمية واسعة الانتشار، تركز في القارة الأفريقية في حوالي ثلاثين بلدا ونيجريا وأثيوبيا وانتقل إلى بعض دول آسيا وأوروبا وأمريكا عن طريق الجماعات المهاجرة إلى تلك الدول. اختلفت الآراء في ختان الإناث في مصر كما في الدول الأخرى إلى حد التناقض، وهذا الاختلاف والتناقض وصل إلى شيوخ الأزهر والأطباء (وبضمنهم وزراء الصحة) والباحثين وعامة الناس، وحتى القضاء تأرجح في مواقفه من ختان الإناث.
