في هذا العمل \"أسرى ألتونا\" يعود الكاتب إلى تقنية مسافة الزمان والمكان إلى جانب ميلودرامية أخرى في بناء الموقف الابتدائي، ففيها يخترق عالم أسرة ألمانية تمزقت بين خدمة النازية قبل الحرب وفي خلالها وخدمة الحلفاء الذين زحفوا على ألمانيا في نهايتها ويبدو كأنه يصفي من خلالها أيضا حساباته مع الحرب ومفهوم المصالح الرأسمالية التي شكلت التاريخ والمناخ النفسي في أوروبا إبان القرن العشرين، سواء في الحرب العالمية الأولى والثانية أو حركات التحرر الوطني من الاستعمار، بما اكتنفها من أشكال مقاومة ومعارك كبيرة أو صغيرة ومظاهر قمع وقهر متفاوتة الشدة.
