يطرح فرويد فرضية جريئة تقول إن موسى لم يكن يهوديا، بل أميريا مصريا من أتباع الفرعون أخناتون، الذي دعا إلى التوحيد بعبادة الإله \"آتون\" بعد انهيار تلك الثورة الدينية، يهرب موسى مع جماعة من العبرانيين ويغرس فيهم هذه العقيدة لاحقا، يقتل موسى على يد قومه، ويعاد تأليه شخصيته لاحقا عبر أساطير دينية، يرى فرويد أن القمع والقتل الجماعي لموسى أدى إلى عقدة ذنب جماعية ظلت مكبوتة في اللاوعي اليهودي، وشكلت أساسا للصلابة الدينية والروحية لليهود. كما يناقش دور اللاشعور الديني في تشكيل المعتقدات والثقافات، ويعتبر أن الدين نفسه نوع من الوسواس القهري الجمعي.
