تدور أحداث الكتاب عن أنه بعد أن ناشد البابا أوربان الثانى الشعب فى خطبته الشهيرة، هب الجميع من فرسان ومزارعين ونساء وأطفال ذاهبين إلى القدس لتحرير الأراضى المقدسة من تسلط المسلمين، بين هؤلاء الصليبيين، هيوج بطل الرواية وأتباعه استغرقتهم الرحلة حوالى ثلاث سنوات قبل أن يصلوا إلى القدس صادفوا خلالها مخاطر عديدة. يعتقد هيوج أنه قد نسى قصة حبه المؤلمة مع الجميلة أجات، فى القدس ويعود إلى أوفيننى، مسقط رأسه فى فرنسا، فإذا بحبيبته الجميلة أجات تلحق به هناك بعد مرور سنوات.
