الهدف من هذا الكتاب هو التعريف بالمصادر الأدبية واللغوية العربية القديمة، ويهدف كذلك إلى تسجيل حركة النمو والتطور التي مر بها في هذين الميدانين. ولتحقيق هذا الهدف تم تناول كل مصدر من هذه المصادر من التأليف قديما ، ثم وصف منهج الكتاب وتحديد مجاله موجزا زاويتين : الأول تتناول التعريف بمؤلفه تعريفا الموضوعي، مع بيان أهم موضوعاته ومجال الانتفاع به وطريقة هذا الانتفاع، وتقديم نموذج صغير منه-كما اقتضى الأمر-لبيان أسلوبه. الثانية تحديد قيمته بوصفه حلقة في سلسلة تاريخية ممتدة، أما الزاوية الأولى فتخدم الفائدة العملية المباشرة، وأما الزاوية الثانية فتخدم التصور العام لحركة تطور التأليف منذ بدايتها الأولى.
