يتحدث الكتاب عن الصورة الذهنية الشائعة لدى الكثيرين من المسلمين هي أن الفن لا صلة له بالدين، فهما موضوعان مختلفان. غير أن هذا التصور يعبر عن فهم ضحل أو مغلوط لا يفطن إلى ما هنالك من صلة حميمة بين الفن والدين. فالفن والدين في الأصل مرتبطان ارتباطا وثيقا، فهما موضوعان ملتحمان في الوعي الإنساني منذ أن حاول الإنسان عبر التاريخ التعبير عن نفسه من خلال أنشطة قصدية لا تتوجه بفعل الغريزة فحسب فالإنسان البدائي قد وعى المقدس باعتباره قوة هائلة غامضة تتحكم في حياته ومصيره، ولذلك يشعر إزاءها بمشاعر متباينة ومتداخلة من الرهبة والروعة والإجلال.
