إن السعادة هي غاية ما يتشوقها كل إنسان»، وأنها أعظم الخيرات جميعا؛ ذلك أن هناك خيرات كثيرة يبحث عنها الإنسان من أجل تحقيق غاية أخرى، في حين أن السعادة غاية مطلوبة لذاتها. إنها إذن نهاية الكمال الإنساني، وأقصى ما يسعى كل امرئ من أجل بلوغه. كما يمكن القول بأن السعادة هي حالة ارتياح تام للذات، يتميز عن الفرح لحركيته وعن اللذة للحظيتها. ولذلك يفترض أن السعادة هي حالة يشعر فيها الكائن البشري بالارتياح الكامل والدائم في نفس الوقت، وهذا ما لا يتوفر في الفرح أو اللذة الحسية مثلا ؛ لأن الأول يرتبط بحركات انفعالية وغريزية وجسدية، بينما تظل اللذة عابرة ومؤقتة. ولذلك يحق لنا التساؤل : أين تتمثل السعادة بالضبط ؟ هل يمكن وصفها بدقة ؟ هل لها مدلول واحد ؟ وكيف السبيل إلى بلوغها ؟ وما علاقتها بالواجب ؟ هل هي علاقة تكامل أم تعارض.
