تعتبر الحملة الصليبية الأولى من أكثر الموضوعات التاريخية التي كتب عنها المؤرخون، ويعود السبب في ذلك إلى اهتمام الأوروبيين في متابعة أخبار الحملة وسيرها إلى بيت المقدس، والاطمئنان على أحوال المشاركين فيها، ومتابعة أنباء المعارك والبطولات التي يقوم بها (جنود المسيح) في الشرق. لذا اهتم المرافقون للحملة من رجال الدين، بتدوين كل ما يشاهدونه وتسجيل كل حادثة صغيرة كانت أم كبيرة، تخليدا لهذه الأعمال.
