ورد كثيرا في القرآن الكريم أهمية الأمثال، فقال الله \"وضرب الله مثلا رجلين أحدهما أبكم\" وقال\" ضرب الله مثلا عبدا مملوكا\" وقال \"إن الله لا يستحيي أن يضرب مثلا ما بعوضة فما فوقها\" وغير ذلك من آيات الكتاب الحكيم، فليس للشريف حاجة إلى شيء من أدب اللسان بعد سلامته من اللحن كحاجته إلى الشاهد والمثل والشذرة والكلمة السائرة فإن ذلك يزيد المنطق ويفيد العقل ولما عرفت العرب أن الأمثال تتصرف في أكثر وجوه الكلام وتدخل في جل أساليب القول أخرجوها في أقواها من الألفاظ، ليخف استعمالها ويسهل تداولها، فهي من أجل الكلام وأنبله وأشرفه وأفضله. وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو جمهرة الأمثال، قد عزم المؤلف إلى تقريب سبل هذا العلم وتلخيص مشكلها وذكر أصولها وأخبارها، ليفهمها الجميع، فجاء هذا الكتاب مشتملا منها على ما لم يشتمل عليه كتاب قط وضمنه المؤلف إياها مخلصة لا يشينها الإهذار ولا يزري بها الإكثار ولا يعيبها التقصير والإقلال. منظومة على نسق حروف المعجم ليدنو جتناها ويسهل مبتغاها.
