يتناول هذا الكتاب صورة الشرق في المخيلة الغربية وكيف تأثرت هذه الصورة بما أنتجته حركة الاستشراق، حيث وصفوا الشرق باعتباره مؤنثا، وثرواته خصبة ورموزه الأساسية هي : المرأة الشهوانية والحريم والحاكم المستبد وحزمة الصور الاستشراقية، وقد اعتبر الكاتب ممدوح الشيخ في كتابه \"الاستشراق الجنسي\" أن بعض المفكرين والرحالة في كتاباتهم عن الشرق، الذي كان مجهولا لشعوبهم آنذاك، صوروا المرأة الشرقية كائنا \"يقدم المتعة\" وإن الغرب كان يحتاج إلى هذا التكريس لتبرير احتلاله للشرق الذي تم تصويره على أنه \"المؤنث الأبدي\" والأدنى تحضرا.
