هذا الكتاب يحتوي على أربع قصص كتبها أندرييف تحت سطوة الواقع وتحت ضربات الإحباط التي كان يعانيها من كل شيء ابتداء من حياته ومرورا بفشل الثورة ضد القيصر ثم الحرب الروسية اليابانية البشعة التي هزم فيها الروس هزيمة نكراء وتحولت ذكرى الحرب إلى تشاؤم وإحباط كبير لدى أندرييف الذي تحول من ثائر ضد القيصر وحكمه إلى ثائر ضد الحرب نفسها وعانى خلال تلك الفترة معاناة شديدة كتب في إثرها أعظم قصصه وهي قصة (الضحك الأحمر) وهي مترجمة في هذا الكتاب ويتناول الكتاب 4 قصص وهم : (سبعة شنقوا-الضحك الأحمر-فكرة-هذا ما كان)
