يعد كتاب (الفاخر) لأبي طالب المفضل بن سلمة (توفى 291 هجري) واحدا من الكتب المهمة في اللغة بوجه عام والأمثال بوجه خاص، إذ احتوى أقوالا وأمثالا ومحاورات كثيرة تمثل الحياة اليومية في مرحلة مبكرة من مراحل التاريخ العربي التي فقدت أغلب كتبها ولا ريب أن هذه الأقوال والأمثال قد كان لها أثر بارز ومهم في الحفاظ على كثير من أصول اللغة العربية ومفرداتها من الضياع، كما أنها مثلت رافدا أساسيا من روافد للتأليف المعجمي عند العرب، إذ اجتهد العلماء في تفسير ألفاظه الغامضة والغربية واختلفوا في تفسير بعضها، أو حملوها على أكثر من معنى.
