الهدف من كتاب (أدبية الأدب) هو الكشف عن الجوانب الجوهرية للنص متمثلة في التشكيل الفني والجمالي المنبثق عن اللغة ومن ثم يحاول الناقد فحص الخصائص التي تجعل من النص نصا أدبيا واعترافها الوحيد يكون بما في النص من خصائص وقيم، أما ما عداها من أشياء غير أدبية فلا مجال للحديث عنه، هذا الكتاب يدعو النقاد أن يستوعبوه أكبر قدر من الثقافة العامة والأدبية خاصة، لأن هذه الثقافة تمكنه من قراءة النص وفي الوقت ذاته لا تفرض عليه أشياء خارجية، إذا كان الشعر حمال أوجه فمن الممكن أن يقرأ النص بأكثر من مستوى من مثل مستوى تركيب العبارة الشعرية، أو مستوى المعجم الشعري ،وهكذا دون أن تفرض قراءة معينة على النص الأدبي دون أن يشطح الناقد ويخرج النص عن سياقه الأدبي وتقاليده الأدبية.
