يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسات في العصر الهلنستي حيث أن الدراسات التي يقدمها لا تستهدف كتابة تاريخ شامل مفصل للفترة التي يمتد عبرها العصر الهلنستي وإنما تشكل محاولة هيكلية لإبراز الاتجاهات الرئيسية العامة التي سادت عددا من جوانب الحياة في تلك الحقبة ولتحليل الآراء والنظريات التي قامت عليها هذه الاتجاهات وتحدث الكتاب عن الملامح الرئيسية للعصر الذي افتتحه الاسكندر على أساس أن هذا العصر طبع باتجاهاته الحضارية وعلى مدى عدة قرون المنطقة المحيطة بالقسم الشرقي للبحر المتوسط ومن ثم فهو يشكل بالضرورة الخلفية الحضارية التي لا يمكن فهم تاريخ مصر في عصر البطالة دون إلمام بأبعادها.
