يعتبر العامل الأساسي لتقييم أداء أية منشأة إنتاجية، صناعية أو خدمية، هو جودة المنتجات، والإتجاه العالمي حالياً قائم على إستطلاع توقع المستهلك إتجاه المنتج أو الخدمة المقدمة، ويصاحب ذلك الإتجاه التأكد من فرضية التحسين المستمر continuous improvement للجودة بغية الإحتفاظ بالأداء الإقتصادي المتفوق. ويعتبر علم الجودة (Quality) من العلوم الأسرع تطوراً في العقود الأخيرة حيث تم الإنتقال من مجرد التفتيش (Inspection) على المنتجات إلى مجموعة من النظم المتكاملة لقياس مستويات الجودة، حيث تم إيجاد مفهوم ضبط الجودة (QC) وهندسة الجودة (QE) وضمان الجودة (QA) والإدارة الشاملة للجودة (TQM) ونظم إدارة الجودة (QMS)، وغيرها.
