هذه الرواية ترصد بدقة نوازع النفس البشرية بكل تنوعها : العطاء والاستئثار، الحب والكره، التسامح والحقد، الوداعة والتمرد... إضافة إلى ذلك فهي تتميز بأسلوبها الرفيع ولغتها الجزلة. ويجد القارئ نفسه مأخوذاً تارة بتعاظم الأحداث وتوترها وتارة بجمال اللغة وشاعريتها. تدور الرواية في إحدى البلدات، \"ليبتسي\" وتساهم جميع عينات المجتمع في أحداثها من الشباب إلى الفتيات، من الرجال إلى النساء، من رجل الذين إلى رجل الدولة، أبطالها الرئيسيين أربعة : -بورينا الرجل القوي ذو المكانة المميزة في البلدة وقد ترمل-أنتيك ابن بورينا الذي يصطدم مع أبيه ويتمرد-هانكا زوجة أنتيك وكنة بورينا، تتعذب وتتعرض للبؤس-ياغنا أجمل فتيات البلدة. في هذا الجزء \"الأول\" يبحث بورينا عن زوجة فكانت ياغنا فما الذي جرى.
