في هذا الكتاب يرصد جاك دريدا الميل إلى تهميش الكتابة على مدار تاريخ الفكر الغربى من أفلاطون إلى ليفى شتراوس. ولقد صاحب هذا التهميش تمييز آخر بين الكتابة الأبجدية بوصفها الأرقى، وأنواع أخرى من الكتابه التصويريه أو الرمزية. وهذا النزوع الذى ينطلق من أولويه الكلام على الكتابه يقوم فى نظر دريدا على ربط الدلالة بالصوت واختزال الوجود إلى الحضور، وهو ما أدى إلى تكريس المركزية العرقي الأوروبية.
