كتبت هذه المسرحية بعد سنوات قليلة من هزيمة ألمانيا فى الحرب العالمية الأولى والثورة التى ألغى إثرها الحكم القيصرى وتأسست الجمهورية فى برلين عام 1918، وتظهر الثورة فى خلفية أحداث المسرحية، والعمل يصور- برؤية يسارية لا تخفى على القارئ - جندى عائد من الحرب بكل عقد وآلام تلك التجربة ليجد حبيبته قد هجرته لرجل أخر، ووسط العواصف الأجتماعية التى كانت تموج بها ألمانيا بعد الحرب يقضى أبطال العمل ليلة مفعمة بالصخب والتوتر والصدق والمشاعر الجياشة. تتميز حوارات المسرحية بالجرأه والقوة كما يغلب عليها طابع التشاؤم، وقد حازت مسرحية (قرع الطبول ليلآ) على جائزة كلايست عام 1922 والتى كانت تعد أهم الجوائز الأدبية فى ألمانيا بين الحربين العالميتين.
