هذا كتاب ذكر الحروف التي توقعها العرب على المعاني المتضادة، فيكون الحرف منها مؤديا عن معنيين، ويظن أهل البدع والزيغ والإزراء بالعرب، أن ذلك كان منهم لنقصان حكمتهم، وقلة بلاغتهم، وكثرة الالتباس في محاوراتهم وقد جمع قوم من أهل اللغة الحروف المتضادة، صنفوا في إحصائها كتبا نظرت فيها، فوجدت كل واحد منهم أتى من الحروف بجزء، وأسقط منها جزءا، وأكثرهم أمسك على الاعتلال لها، فرأيت أن أجمعها في كتابنا هذا على حسب معرفتي، ومبلغ علمي، ليستغني كاتبه والناظر فيه عن الكتب القديمة المؤلفة في مثل معناه إذا اشتمل على جميع ما فيها، ولم يعدم منه زيادة الفوائد، وحسن البيان، واستيفاء الاحتجاج، واستقصاء الشواهد.
