Overview
يعالج الكتاب موضوع الحمقى والمغفلين، وقد قسمه ابن الجوزي إلى أربعة وعشرين بابا ففرق بالحماقة وشرح معناها، وذكر أسماء الحمقى وبين صفاتهم، وحذر من صحبيتهم، وأشار إلى من ضرب المثل في حمقه وتغفيله، وذكر جماعة من العقلاء صدرت عنهم أفعال الحمقى فاصروا عليها مستصوبين لها فصاروا بذلك الإصرار حمقى ومغفلين. ثم انتقل ابن الجوزي ليحدثنا عن المغفلين من القراء والمصحفين ثم ذكر المغفلين من رواة الحديث، وابن الجوزي في هذا الكتاب أديب رائق العبارة، متفنن في طرق الأداء، قادر على التعبيرات النادرة والتصوير الرقيق في أسلوب مرسل لا يجري وراء حلى الألفاظ ولا ينزل على حكم التكلف.
