تدور أحداث الرواية حول «عائشة» ولدت لأب كان قد انتقل حديثا من الفقر والضعف إلى الغنى والسلطة بعد ارتباطه بالحكام التونسيين. لكن تلك الحياة الناعمة الهادئة لم تلبث أن انقلبت رأسا على عقب حينما هاجم الاحتلال الفرنسي تونس فغير - أول ما غيّر - في نفسيات البشر وعلاقاتهم. «عائشة» نفسها وقعت في حب سالم فأفقدها عذريتها لتظل رهينة ذلك الخوف - الذي يقدم وجهًا آخر لمجتمعاتنا - حتى جاءت لحظة الزواج من خالد. في رواية «عائشة» نقرأ عن الأنثى صانعة الأحداث وراوية الحكايات التي عادة ما تتخفى وراء الرجال. هنا نرى وجه الأب وهو يكبر فتعلوه الشيخوخة بضعفها من ناحية وجبروتها من ناحية أخرى. وفي الخلفية هناك «عائشة» وإخوتها الذين يكبرون بين أيدينا مع الوقت ومع الحكي.
