هذه الرواية تعطي خلفية للثورة المكسيكية التي اندلعت عام 1910. وإنتفاضة لعمال الخشب في الغابات ضد الاقطاعية والرأسمالية. فتبرز فيها الأساليب القمعية مما يجبر العمال بشكل أساسي على التمرد أو الموت... فكان تمردهم ضد الشركة القاسية ومديريها. وتدهور أحوال الفاوانيا والهنود الذين تم خداعهم في العبودية، وتوقفهم عن العمل والعقاب بوحشية لدرجة عقوبة تعليق العامل حتى يتعرض للنمل والحرارة والبعوض وما إلى ذلك من أقسى فنون التعذيب وليس قتلهم فعليا ويعتبر الشنق تعبير مجازي في الرواية من شدة الهول الذي يمارس على الضحية وهو معلق في الهواء على العامود.
