ركز المؤلف في كتابه على تاريخ المسرح الياباني العريق الذي يختلف كما يقول، عن مسارح الثقافات الأخرى لارتباطه الوثيق بالعادات والشعائر الدينية، معتمداً على ما سمعه وقرأه وشاهده خلال زيارته تلك، وتحديداً مسرح «النوه» و«الكابوكي»، مع مقدمة بانورامية حول الفنون المتشابكة مع جنس المسرح. ويصف الكاتب مشاهدته لأحد عروض مسرح «النوه» الذي استمر لما يقرب من أربع ساعات، مع تأكيده على أنه أهم الفنون المسرحية التقليدية لديهم، وهو غنائي شعري أرستقراطي يعبر عن الطبيعة الروحانية لفلسفة «الزن» مع رقص تعبيري، ويقول إن له جماهيرية واسعة في اليابان. ويشير سليمان إلى أن مسرح «الكابوكي» نشأ في عهد «إيدو» بين عامة الناس، ويتميز بحيويته وتطوره المستمر وأزيائه الملونة والديكور المسرحي الفخم، مع مهارات التقنيات الحديثة، وجميع ممثليه هم من الرجال الذين جرى تدريبهم في سن مبكرة.
