عندما صدرت رواية \"الحميمية\" في العام 1998، أثارت عاصفة كبيرة بين صفوف النقاد التي وصفها أحدهم بأنها \"رواية قصيرة تثير الاشمئزاز\"، وعندما سئل قريشي عن هجوم النقاد عليه بهذا الشكل أجاب : \"لأنني كنت أطرح موضوعا عاما حول المشاكل التي يواجهها المتزوجون\". وبدا للنقاد أن قريشي تمكن من تمرير مأساته الحقيقية بذكاء شديد بوساطة عمل روائي يدور حول انفصاله عن زوجته من أجل فتاة تصغره في السن، ورد حنيف إن أحدا من هؤلاء النقاد لم يتناول هذه الرواية باعتبارها عملا أدبيا، بل اعتبروها قطعة من السيرة الذاتية، وإذا كان من مهمة الروائي أن ينقل الحقيقة، فعندها يكون المؤلف قد قام بهذه المهمة بشجاعة منقطعة النظير. حولت رواية \"الحميمية\" إلى فيلم سينمائي حاز على جائزة الدب الذهبي في مهرجان برلين السينمائي.
