ليتصور القارىء قبل إقدامه على مطالعة الكتاب مرجا واسعا في سفح جبل، هنالك يتلاقى رجلان على غير ميعاد أحدهما شيخ والاخر فتى الأول خرج من المدينة والثاني من الغاب، أما الشيخ فيسير بخطى ضعيفة متوكئا على عصاه بيد مرتجفة، وفي غضون وجهه وشعره الشائب المسترسل ما ينم على أنه عرك الدهر وعرف أسرار الحياة ومخاتها فذاق منها مرارة أوصلته إلى التشاؤم منها. يصل هذا الشيخ إلى المرج، فيستلقي هنالك على العشب قصد الراحة، واذا فتى جميل غض الإرهاب قد لوحت الشمس بشرته وأكسبته الحياة جذلا وانبساطا، خرج من الغاب يحمل نايه فيسير حتى يصل إلى مكان راحة الشيخ فيضظجع بجانبه. فلا تمر دقيقة سكون الا تراهما قد بدءا بالحديث، فيأخذ الشيخ بابداء نظراته في الحياة كما يراها طرفه المتشائم وخبرته المحنكة، فيرد عليه الفتى شارحا عن الحياة كما تراها عينه الجذلة المتفائلة.
