كان لـ «طه حسين» ما يمكن اعتباره مشروعا ثقافيا خاصا، سعى فيه لدراسة فنون الأدب العربي القديم دراسة نقدية، على أسس علمية رصينة، تحررت من كافة التحيزات المسبقة، وتميزت بجرأتها في انتقاد الثوابت، الأمر الذي جر عليه الكثير من المشاكل والصدامات بينه وبين المؤسسات السياسية والدينية والأكاديمية ؛ فاتهم مرات بالزندقة والجهل ،كما أبعد عن وظيفته بالجامعة، فلم يلن إصراره العلمي نحو الوصول للحقيقة. والكتاب الذي بين يديك جمع فيه المؤلف سلسلة من المحاضرات التي ألقاها للجمهور عن فني النثر والشعر العربيين قبل الإسلام وبعد ظهوره، والتطور الذي حدث فيهما وعلاقة كل منهما بالآخر، وكذلك علاقتهما بالآداب الأخرى، وتتبع كذلك مراحل ظهور النثر واستقلاله عن الشعر، وأبرز من نبغ في هذا الفن الذي لم يكن له نفس السطوة التي حازها الشعر العربي القديم.
