أشهر روايات القاص الكبير سعد مكاوى، تتناول الثلاثين عاما الأخيرة من حكم المماليك فى قالب شيق جذاب. رأى فيها بعض النقاد أنها إسقاط مباشر على الضباط الأحرار وصراعاتهم وعلاقتهم بالشعب. وقد نشرت هذه الرواية عام 1963 فكانت من أوائل الأعمال التى وظفت التراث. رواية ذات تفاصيل دقيقة جدا و تشابك جميل في الأحداث. تدخلك في دنيا العصر المملوكي دون أن أية صعوبة. تفاصيل الحياة في الفترة التاريخية من 1468 إلي 1499، حوالي ثلاثين عام من فترة حكم المماليك .. مابين الردهات والقاعات والغرف المغقلة وأعماق السجون في القصر السلطاني .. وبين أزقة (حارة الحمام) و بيوتها العطنة والمدن المصرية ببوابتها العملاقة التي تغلق علي ساكبنها طوال اللليل والمقاهي والكتاتيب وواقبية المجاذيب والبهاليل.. وبين الريف في (ميت جيهنة) المغتصب خيره وأرضه وفلاحية.
