Overview
كان جانب أساسي من رفض مطلقي البدع والهرطقات، ناجما عن شعورهم بالبون الشاسع بين المسيحية الأولى، من جهة وتوجهات الكنيسة الرومانية بوجه خاص، منجهة أخرى. ذلك أنه إذا كانت بدت خلافات حقيقية حول مسائل الإيمان والطقوس، كمفهوم الثالوث، وقضية النعمة، وما الى ذلك، فقد كانت اللازمة التي تردد باستمرار على لسان البدعيين ذات طابع اجتماعي، الأمر الذي دفع مؤرخ الكنيسة دولينجر لأن يكتب أنه \"كان لكل العقائد الهرطوقية التي ظهرت في القرون الوسطى طبع ثوري\". وهذا الكتاب ثبت فريد بالتالي لسلسلة من الفرق الخارجة عن الديانة الأصلية وانقساماتها اأساسية اللاحقة، منذ القرون الأولى وإلى عصرنا هذا.
