في هذا الكتاب تجمع الدكتورة نازك سابا يارد أستاذة الأدب العربي في كلية بيروت الجامعية والأدبية والناقدة المعروفة تجمع مختلف ما وقفت عليه في حياتها العملية من أشعار ابن الرومي في الهجاء وهدفها إلقاء الضوء على هذا الفن الذي برع فيه ابن الرومي واتخذه سلاحا لرد الأذى والدفاع عن النفس. كما وعنيت بضبط لأهاجي بالشكل وشرحها شرحا دقيقا يمكن القارئ المعاصر من فهمها بكل ما فيها من ثورية وغمز ولمز أحيانا وقد قدمت للأهاجي بدراسة نقدية ربطت هجاء ابن الرومي بسيرته ومعاصريه وأحوال عصره، فأظهرت العوامل المختلفة التي دفعته إلى هذا الهجاء والعناصر الفنية التي جعلته يبرز عن غيره في هذا المضمار، هادية إلى سر عبقريته الفذة.
