هذا الكتاب شبه النمو السكاني في الخمسينات والستينات من القرن الماضي بقطار سريع يسير دون سائق وهو يسير بسرعة ويقترب من الاصطدام بنقص في الغذاء والموارد لكن الوضع تغير بعض الشيء في السبعينات خاصة بعد ظهور إشارات مشجعة على انخفاض معدل المواليد في العديد من الدول النامية الكبيرة واستمرت الصورة في التغير في عقدي الثمانينات والتسعينات ويطرح الكتاب سؤالين أساسيين هما ما هي الأضرار التي يمكن أن يسببها قطار السكان المتهور قبل أن يتوقف؟ وما هي الظروف التي ستكون سائدة عندئذ.
