يعالج الكتاب حالة الإسلام السياسي المعاصرة في الخليج العربي منذ بدايات تشكله حتى الآن. ويتطرق إلى طبيعة خطاب هذه الجماعات وعلاقات بعضها ببعض من ناحية، وعلاقتها كلها بالدولة من ناحية أخرى، خاصة أنها استطاعت أن تحتل موقع الثقل في المجتمع بسبب طبيعة خطابها وقدرتها على الوصول إلى الناس. مر على إصدار الطبعة الأولى من هذا الكتاب قرابة عشر سنوات تبدلت فيها أحوال وتغيرت وجوه وأشخاص، كما خضعت بعض هذه القوى لتحولات داخلية أو خرجت من حلبة الصراع مع الدولة، فيما برزت أخرى جديدة مثّلت تهديداً لسلامة النظام والمجتمع. لكن ذلك لم يغير البنية الأساسية لفهم هذه الحركات، مع ضرورة الإضاءة على التطورات الأخيرة ونتائجها.
