اشترك المرتزقة في الحروب الإسلامية الصليبية في مصر والشام أثناء الفترة ما بين: (٤٩١-٦٩٠ ه/١٠٩٨-1291 م) بسبب اشتعال حدة المواجهات العسكرية، وتصاعدها بين المسلمين والصليبيين، واستمرارها لفترات زمنية طويلة. ولعب المرتزقة دورا حيويا في تطور التنظيمات العسكرية، والتكتيكات الحربية للمؤسسات العسكرية الصليبية والإسلامية. وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على ظاهرة المرتزقة، وبيان مفهوم المرتزقة، ومعرفة خلفياتهم، وتنوع خبراتهم، ومعايير تصنيفهم، وتحليل دوافعهم، ورصد أصولهم، وأدوارهم الخفية والعلنية في الحروب الصليبية، وآثار هذه الظاهرة وتداعياتها.
